Characters in Bramah’s Quest (Book 2)
Bramah: An English/Indian (South Asian) locksmith, demigoddess, and hero of the saga. Her motto is Let All Evil Die and the Good Endure. She is on a quest to find her people and her origins.
Bartholomew: A scholar radicalized by the Resistance. Reluctant leader. Lover of the late Abigail who perished in Book One.
Raphael: The son of Bartholomew and Abigail.
Sherronda: Warrior General and skilled commander of the Resistance. (Her real name is Shanti-Ben, given to her by the Aunties who found her on a barren heath between the Wet and the Dry. Shanti-Ben means Sister of Peace). She wields the Sword of Kali and all who feel that blade die.
Bramah’s Grandmother: A storyteller and mendicant. She is a matriarch of the Resistance and adopts orphans.
The Beggar Boy: Bramah’s apprentice. Both he and Grandmother were separated from Bramah in Book One.
Consortium: A global industrial, economic, agricultural, and communications mega-corporation on the verge of collapse due to the effects of accelerated climate change. It still controls access to the electrical grid known as the Big E.
Guards of the Fifth Gate: Specialists in Surveillance. Foot soldiers and mercenaries, they hire on with Bartholomew due to hunger and lack of wages.
Rajancrantz & Gabbarbhai: Two Gujarati assassins loyal to Sherronda. She secretly hires them as a wartime film crew.
Women of the Wishing Well: Mendicant midwives who live over a hundred years, these aunties are matriarchs of a network of survivors and resisters. In this book we hear of Aunty Magda and Aunty Tabitha.
Beggars: Displaced orphans, often indentured as labourers. Their rhymes and chants, songs and slogans, often act as an underground communications system to which Bramah always pays attention.
Swords: Well-bred, rebellious fighters banished by Consortium for misdemeanours then recruited by Bramah. Famous for their smarts and weapon skills, they are at odds with the Warrior General Sherronda.
The Magnolia Brigade: Textile workers, both skilled and unskilled, liberated by Sherronda from the free trade zones of Consortium. They are fierce fighters totally loyal to Sherronda.
T-LOHK: An itinerant scribe. She appears/disappears, sojourning with Seed Savers and resisters.
Ciswen, Blacksmith of the Winter Portal: She makes Bramah’s locksmith tools.
All characters are uninvited settlers on the unceded territories, the world over, of First Peoples.
